- 1). Turn off the laptop and remove the battery from its chamber. Take apart the display assembly by removing the LCD panel from the laptop casing. Locate screws on the bezel (plastic frame bordering the screen) and remove them to loosen the screen from the plastic casing. Some laptops have concealed screws under rubber seals, which you will have to pry open to expose the screws.
- 2). Use a small, flat object to dislodge the screen from the bezel. Place it between the LCD panel and the frame and gently work your way around the frame to loosen it. Raise the frame gently from the bottom center to access the inverter attached to the LCD panel. Unplug its cables and insert a new inverter; if the screen displays images normally, you can fix the backlight problem by simply replacing the inverter.
- 3). Detach the video and power cables from the LCD screen. Temporarily use a separate set of cables and check whether the LCD screen displays images; if it does, it means the cables were the problem and that you do not need to replace the backlight or the inverter. At this point, you have tested the cables and the inverter for problems, and the only solution is replacing the backlight lamp.
- 4). Remove sticky tapes from the back of the LCD panel, and unglue cables attached to the tapes. Retain the tapes for use in the reassembly process. Carefully detach the small, green board (inverter) from the back of the panel. Release the LCD panel from its metal frame by undoing latches along the edges; be careful when you handle the exposed screen to prevent contamination.
- 5). Remove the layers of transparent foil from the LCD screen. You can now access the backlight lamp. Release the lamp from its holding mechanism and remove it. Remove rubber seals covering the two ends of the lamp, and unsolder the cables attached to either end.
- 6). Bring the replacement lamp close to the cables and resolder them to appropriate ends on the lamp. Replace the rubber seals and mount the lamp.
- 7). Reassemble the LCD screen and attach it to the laptop. Plug in all cables and tighten all screws before you power up the computer.
