- 1). Select a note on your instrument that is comfortable to play. Blow into the instrument and sustain the sound as long as you are able. While doing this, keep your throat relaxed and open to allow the air to pass without hindrance.
- 2). Repeat the same long sound. After you have started playing the sound, use your diaphragm muscles to quickly add an extra push to the sound. This push should be short and should not change the overall volume of the sound. The goal is to add many similar pushes with the diaphragm muscles.
- 3). Practice timing the diaphragm pushes to a beat. Set a metronome to click a fairly slow tempo. Play your sustained tone and add a push from the diaphragm for every beat of the metronome. Practice this at several tempos to increase the strength of the diaphragm muscles.
- 4). With the metronome at a slow tempo, play the sustained tone while dividing the beat with diaphragm pushes. Practice adding two, three or four diaphragm pushes for each beat of the metronome to further increase your muscle control and strength.
