How to Prevent Cold From Coming in the Bottom of a Patio Door

    • 1). Stick the long edge of a bath towel underneath the bottom of the patio door. If there is not enough space to do so, merely push it up against the base of the door as closely as possible. Roll or bunch up the rest of the towel so as to completely seal the bottom of the door.

    • 2). If there is still cold air coming in, particularly along the sides and top of the door where a towel will not work for insulation, purchase a patio door insulation kit. There are multiple brands available, though one of the best is 3M's kit, containing a clear film to cover the door and tape to seal the edges.

    • 3). Apply the kit to the patio door. Tape the film over the entire door, making sure to cover all cracks where cold air could come in. Note that the kit manufactured by 3M is best applied while the air and surface temperatures are still above 50 degrees Fahrenheit---the earlier in the year you install it, the better.
