The rural community of Portland, Tennessee is located in north central Tennessee in Sumner County, just 5 miles south of the Kentucky border and 35 miles north of Nashville. The town is best known for its annual Strawberry Festival, held each May since the early 1940s. While in Portland, be sure to enjoy some down-home cooking in a picturesque early Victorian building, or savor a country breakfast on a local working farm. - Travel back in time to the 1800s and dine at 5 Chefs Restaurant, located in the Gossett House on West McGlothlin Street. This Victorian, one-time residence not only houses the 5 Chefs Restaurant, but is also home to a gift shop, an antiques store and an apparel boutique. The relaxed restaurant, in business since 2004, serves breakfast on Saturday and an extensive lunch Monday through Saturday. The interior features hardwood floors and a sunlit dining room, due to an array of large picture windows. The menu includes a comprehensive cooked breakfast on Saturday; soup, salad and sandwiches; and several daily Southern-style lunch specials, including select meats and vegetables. In addition, the on-site coffee shop serves coffee, tea, espresso, cappuccino, pastries and breakfast biscuits. After lunch, head over to the gift shop and apparel boutique for a spot of afternoon shopping.
- Located on more than 400 acres of land belonging to Bottom View Farm, the Old Time Fixin's Restaurant is the place in Portland for an authentic Southern country breakfast. Open Monday through Saturday for breakfast only, the restaurant offers a large, home-cooked menu consisting of eggs, bacon, country ham, grits, biscuits and gravy, juice and coffee. Some patrons even show up for breakfast on horseback. After filling your tummies, head over to the farm to pick your own fresh berries, or venture to the on-site lake to try your hand at reeling in some catfish. The location also houses an ice-cream parlor, and is home to an annual Fall Festival in October, featuring pumpkin rides, haunted houses and more.
- If you're in the mood for some pizza while in Portland, Godfather's Pizza, located on Highway 31 West should fit the bill. The restaurant offers both dine-in facilities and an extensive take-out menu that includes mini, small and medium pizzas; and sides, such as salads, hot wings, calzones and potato wedges. Pizza toppings are plentiful and include Italian sausage, pepperoni, ham, bacon, olives, onions and jalapeno peppers.
