Card Games for Smart Kids

    • Card games are a fun way to learn.playing cards image by Warren Millar from Fotolia.com

Card games are a great way for children to learn and have fun at the same time. They can teach basic math facts, probability and strategic planning. To optimize learning and fun, choose card games at the right level for your children. If your kids are tired of playing Go Fish and Memory, teach them card games that are more suited to them. Smart kids will benefit from games that move beyond basic concepts, yet remain simple enough for children to enjoy.

    Blitz

    • This card game is best for children who understand addition and probability. Players try to get a score as close to 31 as possible. Each player receives three cards from a regular deck. Number cards have their numerical value, all face cards have a value of 10, and aces have a value of 11. On each turn, a player draws a new card from the deck and discard an unwanted card. If a player obtains a hand that is exactly equal to 31, the player calls out “blitz” and wins the game. Alternatively, if a player's hand has a value close to 31, he can use his turn to knock on the table, rather than draw and discard. This signals to all other players that they will have one more turn. After the remaining players have gone, all players reveal their hands. The player with the hand closest to 31 wins the game.

    Times War

    • This is a great game for older children who are learning their multiplication tables. You can use a regular deck of cards; each number card has its number value, face cards having a value of 10, and aces having a value of one. The rules are similar to regular war; on each turn, players lay two cards on the table and multiply these two cards together. The player whose cards have the greatest product wins all the cards. Play continues until one player obtains all the cards.

    Egyptian War

    • This game is great for smart kids who can understand reasonably complex rules. Use a regular deck of cards and deal them out to the players. Play goes in a circle, with each player laying one card from the top of their card pile onto the top of a central pile. If the cards laid down are number cards, play continues with the next player also laying down only one card. If a face card is laid, the rules change. For jacks, queens, kings, and aces, the next player will lay one, two, three or four cards, respectively. The only way to get out of laying all these cards is to lay a face card. Anytime a face card is laid, that player may stop laying cards and play moves to the next player. If the next player lays all the required cards without laying a face card, the last player to lay a face card collects all the cards in the pile. The only other way to collect cards is to be the first player to slap the pile when doubles are laid. This player collects all the cards in the pile. Play continues until only one player remains with cards.
