Landforms – An Insightful Description

AS per the definition of geology and earth sciences Landforms are essentially geomorphologic units which are described as per their location on landscape, surface form and as a part of the topography. Landforms are further classified as per their physical attributes which include slope, stratification, soil type, rock exposure, orientation and elevation. Seascape, water bodies with features like peninsulas, seas and bay along with ocean ridges, ocean and volcanoes form the other elements of landform.

Landforms don't refer to any man made features like ports, harbors and canals. Also grasslands, craters, deserts and forests are included in this list. The terms which are used above cannot be restricted to Earth only and may be used in order to describe the surface of other heavenly bodies in the Universe. For example – mountains, valleys, hills and polar caps are virtually on all terrestrial planets.

Several factors like movement of tectonic plate or erosion or deposition are liable to affect as well as generate a landform. Biological elements may also influence their formation as in the case of dune systems, the development of which is dependent on role played by vegetation or the coral reefs where algae as well as corals aid the reef formation.

Volcanic landforms too tend to be controlled through geological process which plays a role in their formation and further development. These landform characteristics will highlight the material of its composition, which will depend on pre eruptive behavior of volcano involved. Process in later stages might modify original landform yet one can easily locate clues about original process of formation in volcanic landforms. Like any other landform volcanic landforms too are great changes in the earlier topography and tend to retain the elements of their original composition, the study of which helps in understanding the evolutionary process of the development of the current landform.

A Prairie is considered a part of temperate grasslands, shrub-lands or savannas by several ecologists. The prairie essentially has moderate rainfall, temperate climate and grasses, shrubs along with herbs which forms dominant vegetation of the region.  Among these temperate grassland one may also include Pampas form Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, Steppes form Eurasia are another addition.

Prairie refers to land which is typically located in the North America. The term prairie encompasses regions of Interior lowlands situated in United States, Mexico as well as Canada. This also would include the vast region of Great Plains along with wet hilly land situated towards the eastern side.

Prairies also include entire states of Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Kanas and North Dakota along with parts of Colorado, Montana, Iowa, Indiana, Mexico, Illinois, Wisconsin, Texas, Wyoming and Missouri. Therefore, Prairies stand out as a prominent physiological feature of the American landscape.
