- 1). Take the large plastic tub outside. Find a place that has level ground and soft dirt.
- 2). Snap some chalk string around the sides of the tub on the ground to mark the size of the tub. Set the tub aside. Measure the depth of the tub with a tape measurer or ruler. Dig a hole inside the chalk line you made that is about one inch deeper than the tub is long, and fit the tub tightly inside the hole. Pat down the loose dirt around the tub.
- 3). Fill the tub with chlorine-free water, decorations and small plants and make a bridge out of sand and rocks to exit the tank onto a dirt section.
- 4). Close off a dirt section with railroad ties or landscaping timber that is about 2 feet by 4 feet. Make sure to double-stack the wood and push the bottom stack about two inches into the soil. Place leaf compost, moss and wet play sand in the dirt section to provide a comfortable place for the turtles to live and lay eggs.
- 5). Decorate the living area with edible plants and large rocks.
