The coloration of the Greek tortoise is highly variable and can range from olive with dark spots in the middle of each scute on the carapace to a "golden" form which is almost entirely yellow in appearance.
The Greek tortoise is from a temperate climate though it could also be a bit comfy in cooler temperatures.
They have a close similarity with the African spur thigh tortoise and most of the time they are called the Greek spur thigh tortoise.
The main difference between the Greek turtle and the African spur tortoise are their sizes and diet plans.
The Greek tortoise is strictly herbivorous.
They need a high fiber, low protein and calcium rich diet.
Dark leafy greens such as kale, collard and turnip greens should be fed regularly.
Greek turtles are a terrestrial tortoise which prefers a dry weather.
A perfect place to hide should also be given.
Such hiding places can be made from rocks or plastic containers.
Commercially manufactured caves is another alternative.
Different types of substrates can be used.
A sandy soil mix of 50% topsoil and 50% Caribbean play sand is often used.
Aspen shavings, milled coconut fiber and even compressed recycled paper can also be used.
High protein foods such as store bought prepared dog and cat food and beans should be not be given at all costs.
Since this will be one of the cause renal failure due to the excessive protein, fruits can be fed in small amount since too many fruits will result in diarrhea and other health issues.
If calcium supplementation is needed try to use pure calcium carbonate.
The bone of the cuttle fish can also be given and is normally bought in pet shops for calcium supplementation for birds.
Fresh water should be given at all times in a shallow dish.
The Greek tortoise will also appreciate a 10-minute soak in a shallow bath water to avoid dehydration.
