Developed and primitive campsites abound, both on state parkland and private camping retreats. Offering a variety of amenities, campgrounds along the California coast cater to all types of campers, from backpackers to those traveling in recreational vehicles. - Located in Mendocino county, Anchor Bay Campground is situated on a small, three-quarter-mile-long beach in northern California. Founded in 1925, the six-acre privately-owned campground stands three hours north of San Francisco along Highway 1, California's coastal highway. With forest or beachfront views, the campground offers RV sites and traditional tent pitches, each with water. Electricity is available at 10 sites and one features full hookups, with water, sewer and power. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit and lies within sight of restrooms, showers and the public recreational area. The on-site store sells t-shirts, ice, bait and firewood. Anchor Bay Campground stands within walking distance of the nearby village, where additional provisions are sold. Pets are allowed but must be leashed at all times.

Covering 8,000 acres, the park features mountains, ocean bluffs and ancient sand dunes. The campground, located near Spooner Cove, features 40 basic camping pitches with picnic tables and fire pits. No electrical or sewer hookups are available and water is provided from two large water tanks. Showers and pit toilets are accessible from all sites. Historical sites, hiking trails and fishing are popular attractions at the park, as well as guided tours and whale watching during the month of August.

Sites include 20 tent pitches and 80 RV sites, each with a fire ring, cooking grill and picnic tables. Amenities include wireless internet, cable television hookups, a pool, playground, convenience store and snack bar, as well as shower, horseback riding and laundry facilities. Close to hiking trails, fishing and kayak tours, Ocean Mesa at El Capitan also offers spa treatments including massage and facials. Well-behaved dogs are welcome and two dog runs are provided.
