Zermatt / Klein Matternhorn is situated in the Alpine canton of Valais in Switzerland, lying at the foot of the world renowned Matterhorn peak, rising 14,691 feet above sea level.
It is considered as one of Switzerland's top skiing destinations.
The winter season in the area is one of the longest in Europe, beginning in November and ending sometime in May.
Ski areas around the resort offer 156 miles or 250 kilometres marked pistes served by 71 lifts.
It caters mainly to intermediate skiers, although there are also trails for experts and a few for beginners.
Zermatt has limited off-piste tracks because of much presence of granite rocks in the surrounding areas.
Tourists can choose to ski any of the major ski areas of the resort namely Rothorn Paradise (at 3103 metres), the Gornergrat (at 3089 metres), and the Klein Matterhorn (at 3883 metres).
The resort is nestled in Switzerland and that makes it accessible from a number of airports.

The farthest you can reach if you use car rentals or motor vehicles from any of the airports is Täsch.
All routes between Täsch and Zermatt are closed to public vehicles.
Nevertheless, you can leave your cars in the multi-story car parks in Matterhorn Terminal Täsch or in public car parks located in Täsch.
The most feasible transfer is using the railway, although you may also take an electro taxi, which is one of the few motor vehicles allowed to travel, along with electro-buses.
You may also ride in horse drawn carriages or bicycles.
If you choose to use the railway system, shuttle trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway traverse Täsch and Zermatt every twenty minutes.
This will take you to Zermatt after 1 hour and 30 minutes of travelling through the Nicolaital valley.
The Lötschberg base tunnel from Frutigen going to Raron also cuts back travel time to Zermatt by the rails.
Riding the Glazier Express from St Moritz - Davos to Zermatt can also be done.
Train tickets are available from the Swiss Federal Railway.
If you plan to travel by air, it is good to know that Zermatt has its own heliport managed by the Air Zermatt company.
Travelling via a helicopter could take you to the area normally in less than an hour but it also costs more.
Winter time in Zermatt means that you can travel with no charge on the Bergbahnen line provided that you are holding any ticket for the Zermatt Bergbahnen in the Matterhorn glacier paradise area.
From the Winkelmatten line however, you can only travel free during the winter season id you posses a peak pass or any other multi-journey ticket or a ski pass.
Booking a limousine or van from the airport going to Zermatt can also be arranged.
