Ski Destinations in Europe - The 5 Top Resorts

It's that time of year where those of us with a passion for the white stuff are desperately searching the internet for the best possible ski deal for the least possible money.
Because there are so many wonderful resorts across Europe it can be difficult to find the pick of the pistes, so before you track down a cheap flight and dig out your passport, take a look at the top five European Ski destinations.
5: L'Alpe d'Huez.
Anyone who has seen the famous tour de France Bike race will undoubtedly remember the spectacular stage which winds its way through twenty one hair pin bends to the foot of L'Alpe D'Huez.
The resort is one of the largest in Europe and boasts 249 Kilometres of runs and 84 Ski lifts.
The predominantly south facing slopes will appeal to novices and experts alike, with a great variety of runs.
For the most adventurous, there is a wealth of off piste possibilities and the prospect of skiing the Sarenne, the world's longest black run.
4: St Anton.
An Austrian resort not for the faint hearted! Known for its challenging yet rewarding runs, St Anton is a favourite amongst intermediate and expert skiers.
St Anton forms part of the Arlberg region, and thanks to links with neighbouring villages, skiers can enjoy up to 260 kilometres of runs and breathtaking changing scenery from one village to the next.
With some of the most reliable snowfall in Europe, coupled with a lively après ski scene, St Anton is a great resort for any seasoned skier who wants to ski hard and play hard.
3: Espace Killy.
Combining the resorts of Val d'Isere and Tignes with the best lift system in Europe means more opportunity to ski, on some of the best slopes Europe has to offer.
Ski Espace Killy, and you'll clock up more skiing miles than anywhere else and with a great snow record you can expect good conditions on and off piste.
Apres Ski is good and varied although you'll want to bring plenty of cash! 186 Kilometres of groomed pistes is enough terrain for the even the most experienced skiers and choosing Espace Killy resort will result in an action packed week of great skiing for intermediates and experts alike.
2: La Grave.
This ski resort should come with a serious health warning and is known as something of a death trap for anyone but the most experienced skier, but for the experts, there is no more exciting off piste action in the world.
With only one Ski lift, rising up to 3550 metres above sea level, and absolutely no marked runs it's every man for himself against the elements and the might of the mountain.
The resort of La Grave is very basic and you won't find any night life but if you want to tackle the most challenging uncharted off piste territory in Europe then La Grave is the place for you.
1: The Three Valleys.
Linking the world famous millionaires' playground Courcheval, Prince Charles' resort of choice Meribel, and with great skiing and miles of north facing high slopes the village of Val Thorens, The Three Valleys offers one of the largest skiing areas in the world.
There are over 600 kilometres of immaculately groomed runs and a superb infrastructure of ski lifts which means skiing from Courcheval, through Meribel and onto Val Thorens and back again is achievable in a good days skiing - if you're quick! The Three Valleys allows you to rub shoulders with the rich and famous, albeit at a price, and offers some of the best on and off piste skiing in Europe.
Add to that great restaurants and bars, and some of the most stunning scenery you will ever see, The Three Valleys must surely be the best resort in Europe.
