World Grand Prix 2013: Final Review

Phil Taylor was once again the toast of darts in Dublin, as he beat off the field to pick up an astonishing 11th World Grand Prix victory in Ireland.

It's the famous tournament where you must start every leg with a double as well as finish with it, making for some interesting scenarios being played out in front of a hectic Dublin crowd! It all makes for some frenetic action, big scorelines and sometimes even occasional upsets, which we had plenty of this year.

When we last checked in on the progress of the tournament, we were at the quarter-final stage. Eight men were still in the mix to become champion, including the defending champ Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutchman was to fall at that stage though, as he became the victim of a huge upset from England's Dave Chisnall. Chisnall famously ended Phil Taylor's reign as world champion at the Alexandra Palace in 2011, and he was at it again in Dublin!

A 3-2 win over the world ranked No. 2 sent him through to the semi-finals, where he overcame another player who defied the odds to make the latter stages, England's Justin Pipe.

Despite Pipe enjoying a good week in Dublin though, he was no match for Chisnall, who looks to be hitting brilliant form ahead of a crucial few months in darts. Chisnall's 5-2 victory in sets over his fellow Englishman sent him through to his first major final, where he would face Taylor.

Taylor's route to the final was just as tricky. His quarter-final tie pitted him against Scotland's Gary Anderson, a man who has experience of playing in world finals in the past.

Taylor was in blistering form though. A 3-0 was every bit as convincing as it sounds, unfortunately Anderson was no match for Taylor's superb double shooting and power scoring.

It was the semi-finals where Taylor was expected to meet his trickiest opponent. England's James Wade is still one of the best players on planet darts, and a true tussle was expected between two players who have stacks of major titles between them.

However, Taylor was once again too good for his opponent. Wade could never really get going in the match, and "The Power" took full advantage of his opponents mishaps. Taylor breezed into yet another major final with the PDC with a staggering 5-1 victory.

Ahead of the final, many predicted that Chisnall would have to get away to a blistering start if he was to cause perhaps the biggest upset in recent memory, and be the first man to beat Taylor in a World Grand Prix final.

That good start never happened, unfortunately.

The final was a whitewash, in every sense of the word. Chisnall could not get going, and Taylor took full advantage. He breezed to a quite unbelievable 6-0 victory to win the title in quick time.

In 11 finals played in for Taylor in the tournament, he has now won all 11, which is yet another incredible feat in the career of the finest darts player of all time.

Attention will now turn to a busy festive period in darts. That gets underway in November when both factions of the world of darts unite for the Grand Slam of Darts. We'll be covering every arrow thrown right here on About.com, so don't forget to touchdown and check on the tournaments progress!
