How to Make a Bowling Ball Curve

    • 1). Begin by having a relaxed grip with the finger and thumb holes. Your fingers shouldn't be so loose that the ball falls right off. You don't want to have too tight a grip, though, or else the ball won't come off at the right moment.

    • 2). Keep your hand on the bottom of the bowling ball as you pull back. The ball should begin cradling in your palm and the front of your wrist.

    • 3). Turn your hand to the side as you begin your upswing. Your hand should be in a handshake position as you prepare to release the bowling ball.

    • 4). Release your thumb from the ball first. The ball should easily glide off of your thumb as you get to the handshake position. Keep your other fingers in the holes. Otherwise the ball won't curve properly.

    • 5). Use your fingers and palm to turn the ball in a counterclockwise (or clockwise if you're left-handed) motion. Don't twist your arm as it will put too much spin on the ball. Your arm should retain the handshake motion while your hand and wrist dictate the hook of the bowling ball.

    • 6). Allow the ball to roll off your fingers and down the lane. When you choose to release the bowling ball depends on how much hook you want. Releasing the ball early in your upswing will cause more hook. Waiting long will reduce the natural curve of the ball.
