- 1). Purchase a piece of muslin from a fabric store. It needs to be at least 44 inches wide, and you will need 1 1/2 yards of the material.
- 2). Wash the fabric by hand or in a gentle machine-washing cycle. Dry on low or medium heat or air dry.
- 3). Cut the fabric into a square, 44 inches wide by 44 inches long, with the sewing scissors.
- 4). Heat the iron, using a steam feature if you have it, or spraying the material with water from the bottle. Turn up the edge of the fabric 1/4 inch, ironing this to keep it in place as you go around the full square on the back side of the fabric. This will keep the fabric from fraying. When you are back to the beginning of the square, turn the edge of the fabric up another 1 inch all the way around, ironing into place.
- 5). Using the needle and thread or sewing machine, sew a running stitch around the blanket edge, placing the thread in the 1/4-inch turned-under portion of the material. This will secure the larger hem, as well as keep the ends tucked under to prohibit fraying when the blanket is washed.
