- 1). As with any medical treatment, always seek advice, ideally at time of fitting, from a health care professional. There may be specfic information relating to your diagnosis or to you type of Aspen collar.
Always check that you should be wearing it at night before attempting a sleep in one... Once you'll try sleeping I think you'll know why! - 2). The fitting of your Aspen collar is affected by changes in position - it's worth adjusting the fitting once you're in your bedtime position. This might be easier with the help fo a relative.
- 3). While bed might seem the logical place to sleep... it's not necessarily the most restful with an Aspen Collar. Instead, I would recommend using a recliner. Many with back or neck problems opt to purchase one specifically for recovery as the thought of several sleepless weeks can be too much to bear. Your recliner should be - if possible - electric. This is because of the awkward movement of raising a recliner's feet and reclining naturally. Alternatively you could rely on the help of a relative or friend.
- 4). A normal chair - with footstool - could provide a comfortable sleep in the evening for no extra cost. You might find this easier if you strategically place firm pillows to create a slight recline in the chair.
- 5). Bed doesn't necessarily have to be ruled out = with the help of pillows, of course! The softer the better for this job! Sleeping on your side is perhaps the most comfortable. To give your neck and back further support, prop up pillows where necessary.
