How to Apply for a Free Patent

    • 1). Consolidate your idea or invention into a single, comprehensible and intelligent petition for a 12 month accelerated exam--either a word document or PDF. This should be a proposal that outlines the specifics of the idea, its purpose, and the research conducted to prove your intellectual property. Save this information to your computer and back up the document to prevent lost work.

    • 2). Log on to the US Patent Office website below. Prepare your materials--personal information, invention document, and any legal paperwork obtained--to enter into the system. Begin by entering your name and email address. Indicate this is a new application. Indicate whether your patent is for a new design or a utility. Click the radial button "Accelerated Exam." This will expedite your application. Click "Continue."

    • 3). Enter the title of your invention. Re-enter your name or name of the inventor credited with the idea and project. Click on the "Radial" button next to "Correspondence Address." Fill in your personal information. Click "Continue."

    • 4). Verify the information on the screen has transferred correctly. Click the button "Choose File" and upload the document containing the invention or design proposal you wish to file. Click on "Petition for 12 month accelerated exam" from the drop down menu. From the second drop down menu, choose the description that best fits the description of your file. Click "Upload and validate." If no errors occur, click "Continue."

    • 5). Click "Confirm/Submit" to bypass the payment option screen. Click "Continue." Your application has been submitted and will be processed. If you would like, you can visit the contact page and review the application with a representative.
