Case 027 - Patient With an Embolic Event and Signs of Infection
A 71-year-old female with diabetes was admitted because of a transitory ischemic attack. The computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an ischemic stroke in the region of the right medial cerebral artery. The patient had a prominent inflamed ulceration on her right forefoot and signs of infection. She had fever, an elevated white blood cell count (16,000), and an elevated C-reactive protein of 5 mg/dL (normal: < 1 mg/dL). Pulmonary congestion was present on the chest x-ray, and a prominent systolic murmur was heard on auscultation.
