- 1). Identify the resources required for successful completion of the project. Define your resources in numerical terms, e.g. 2 civil engineers, 1 ton ballast and 1 concrete mixer, and determine the amount of time each resource will be needed. Resource definition helps in understanding the nature and scope of the project tasks as well as identifying the resources required to complete various tasks.
- 2). Allocate resources to each project task to ensure efficient and effective use of project resources. Resource allocation reduces resource waste and saves time. Resource requirements of a project task may change as the task progresses. A project task may start with two people and progress to five people in its mid-stage and require only one person at its end.
- 3). Determine the aggregate resources needed to complete all the tasks on a period-by-period basis. This is achieved by summarizing the total project resources required based on the allocation of resources to individual tasks. Prepare a resource aggregation chart showing the total number of resources required for each task.
- 4). Develop a resource profile by comparing the resources required for each task and the actual number of resources available. This process is known as resource leveling, and its purpose is to ensure demand for project resources does not exceed resource availability.
