The need for discount dental treatment appears even more pressing with the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull. Scientists are concerned that contaminated ash, now drifting into parts of Europe, can negatively affect both human and animal life. A compound known as fluoride has been found in the volcanic emission, which could contaminate the grass that many animals eat and even the water humans drink.

The Dangers of Fluoride

This compound, when consumed in moderation, is most known for being an effective prevention for cavities. Unfortunately, it is also the main cause of a disease called fluorosis. This disease afflicts children's teeth with streaked or speckled white spots, black or brown stains, and cracking and pitting. These signs often appear after a child consumes large amounts of fluoride during their teeth-development stage. Fluorosis in Ireland

The ash from Iceland's volcano may affect the country of Ireland. Lack of Consensus

While Thai researchers have discovered some of the risks of this chemical, other parts of Europe and even America are still convinced the compound is helpful. However, scientists have proven that even 2-3 milligrams can affect an adult's thyroid functions as well as inducing behavioral changes.
