- 1). Figure out the type of magnet you have. If the magnet is of medium strength and metallic, it is probably a ferrite or alnico magnet, and can be machined. If your magnet is a flexible strip, it is a plastic magnet, which will be easy to cut. If you have a magnet that is small and very strong, it is probably a rare-earth magnet, and will shatter if you try to cut it.
- 2). Cut a flexible magnet with scissors. These sorts of magnets come in strips, often with an adhesive on one side, and are used to hold doors and cabinets closed. They are usually very easy to cut.
- 3). Use a saw to cut a metal magnet. A hacksaw will work, but it may take some time and damage your blade. A diamond cutter will work better. Go slowly and gently to avoid damaging the magnet.
- 4). Use some sort of abrasive for fine, detailed work. Smooth the edges of a metal magnet with a rasp. Use sandpaper on a plastic magnet.
