Laws on Fencing

    Animal Fences

    • Different states and counties have different regulations in regards to fencing in livestock. For example, under the guidelines of the Missouri Revised Statutes Section 272.020, all livestock fences must be at least 4 feet in height. The posts cannot be more than 12 feet apart, and must be stuck firmly in the ground.

    Pool Fences

    • Residential swimming pools are often required to have a fence built around them to ensure safety. Pool fence requirements vary from state to state. In Peachtree City, Georgia, all pool fences must be at least 4 feet tall and cannot contain any openings that would allow someone to crawl under or through the fence. A permit must be obtained before any pool fence can be constructed.

    Electric Fences

    • Those who wish to build an electric fence around their property must be aware of the laws that apply. Under the guidelines of the California Legislature Section 17152, electric fence cannot be sold or used unless it is approved by the National Electric Code of the National Fire Prevention Association, the Standards Association of Australia, the Underwriters Laboratories, or the New Zealand Standards Institute.
