- Take the appropriate drug to treat the cause of the postnasal drip. Take an antihistamine such as Benadryl, Claritin or Zyrtec if the cause is allergies. Take a decongestant if the cause of the excess mucus is from the common cold or irritated sinuses. A decongestant can be taken in combination with an antihistamine to treat the cause and the symptom. Either an oral or a spray decongestant will dry up the excess mucus and will reduce the swelling in the sinuses. Drink at least six 8-oz. glasses of water while taking a decongestant as lack of ingested water can lead to dehydration.
- Use natural remedies to help sooth the nasal cavities and stop the excessive production of mucus. Avoid any allergens that may be causing the body to respond. Drink plenty of water on a daily basis to help the body rid itself of any contaminants.
Use a neti pot, also called a sinus wash. Take 1 cup of warm water and mix it with 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Dissolve the salt completely in the warm water. Pour the solution into the neti pot. Place the opening of the neti pot into your right nostril. Turn your head so that the chin is parallel with your shoulders and pour the solution into your nose. Allow the solution to come out the other nostril. Gently blow your nose and repeat on the other side. This will cleanse and moisten the nasal cavities. - Implement herbal remedies to help your body function properly. Eat two to three cloves of garlic daily. Crush the clove of garlic and let it sit for 15 minutes before ingesting to get the most benefit. Mix the crushed garlic with a teaspoon of honey to make it go down easier. Garlic is a strong natural antibiotic, killing off any bad bacteria that are causing the sinus drainage.
Take ginger to help with swollen or inflamed sinuses because it has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can be purchased raw, in tea form or in supplement capsules. Ginger will also help rid the body of any toxins causing the sinuses to negatively react.
