THE STORY OF AN EGOTIST THE SELFISH LIFE OF LUMAN: There lived an egotist by name Luman who would not like to share his food with anybody no matter how intimate.
He was a professional blacksmith.
He had two sons from a wife Matchu.
This man lived a life that could not be described as sociable by those who came around him.
He had been living like this for many years.
ACKLAMBA'S DETERMINTION TO SHARE IN LUMAN'S FOOD: One faithful day a man named Acklamba said to himself, "I must feed from Luman's house whether he likes it or not".
He did not discuss this with any person even his wife.
In the evening of that day he called on his wife to prepare packed food for him as he would be taking to a long journey that would last for two days.
His wife obeyed and did what was instructed.
She prepared packed food for her husband who took it along with him in the pockets with water in a plastic bottle.
Aklamba had planned to go to Luman's house for blacksmithing.
The day before he could leave, he went round the neighbourhood and collected all spoiled hoes, horse shoes, machetes and other iron he could lay his hands on.
He did not disclose his mission to anybody.
THE EARLY ARRIVAL OF ACKLAMBA: The following day, Acklamba left his house as early as four thirty 4.
30 am on a journey to Mr Luman's house.
He arrived at five fifty 5.
50 am a time nobody had taken breakfast.
Acklamba knocked on Luman's house that Luman should come out this early because he has brought plenty of work that if not started early would not be finished on time.
Luman came out happily to resume the work which was brought by a very rich customer.
He praised Acklamba for his profitable thoughts saying he will make good market out the work brought to him.
The black smith went to his office and resumed work with joy and Acklamba did not argue the price fixed by Luman.
WORK AT THE BLACK SMITH: Luman worked and worked and worked till about nine 9:00 am and was hungry but did not know how to complain about it because Acklamba would share the meal if he did.
Just imagine someone coming to your place at such early hours, and a good customer for that matter, it would be difficult to have a meal without him.
Luman's wife came and signalled to him to go for break and ease himself before he will come back for the work.
Acklamba told Luman that where ever Luman goes, he is going with him because he wants to give him close marking so as to enable him finish the job he brought.
Acklamba would walk out and bring out his packed food and take a little out of it and drink some water.
He starved Luman till night but work could not finish that day so they were to continue the following day.
CHASING OF THE RATS: It happened that Acklamba will sleep at Luman's house till the following morning so they will continue with the mending work.
Before Aklamba would sleep, he asked his host Luman if house rats used to disturb him at night.
Luman said there are a lot of rats.
This made Acklamba went to the nearby bush and found a good whip to keep by his bedside to fight the rats in Luman's house.
It happened that Luman had no guest house so they were to share his only bedroom with the guest but on a different bed.
So they went in to sleep.
One thing of note is that Luman did not feed for the whole of that day as he was afraid of sharing his meal with another person.
Acklamba quickly went into deep snoring which made Luman feel that since Acklamba was asleep, he will take his meal without him.
The meal was prepared in the afternoon.
Luman asked his wife to go for the food and serve him while the guest is sleeping.
There was no light and movement was not so easy.
So when Matchu went to fetch the food, her footsteps were so lazily dragging on the ground and on hearing the noise of removing some food item that was hidden in the oven, Acklamba reached out to his whip and gave her a correct strike with it calling on Luman that the rats in his house have started disturbing and he is not going to spare them.
He asked Luman whether he was happy with the situation, to this Luman answered in affirmative.
THE BEATING AT NIGHT: They went to sleep but Luman was very hungry and asked the wife to go again for the food and warning her to be more careful this time not to make any noise.
Acklamba who was snoring but was not asleep was listening to the discussion.
When Matchu came for the second time to take the food, Acklamba reached out to his whip and gave her another strike which made her run to meet her husband in bed.
Aklamba called Luman again telling him how he was able to strike the same rat that came the first time.
He enquired whether Luman was happy with his vigilance, to this too Luman said he was in support.
When they went to sleep again Luman told his wife to be more careful this time but his wife refused to go for the food.
She asked Luman to go for it himself.
Because Luman was so hungry he set out for the food but on reaching the oven Acklamba reached to his whip and gave him a correct strike which made him run quickly back to his bed.
Acklamba called Luman and said the rat that has come out now is a male rat and he has dealt with it accordingly, he sought to know if Luman was happy with the situation but Luman said yes.
LUMAN SLEPT WITHOUT FOOD: The night was not also conducive for Luman to eat because he did not want to share his food with anybody.
As the beating went on, Luman remained hungry, did not sleep well and the food was bad since it was cooked in the afternoon of the previous day.
Luman remained calm and resolved to finish the work early morning to enable his visitor leave so that he would have a meal.
The following day, Matchu was not happy because of the beating she received in the night from their guest and could not cook breakfast.
Luman hurried and finished the work and asked Acklamba to leave for his house.
Acklamba thanked him for a job well done and set out for his house.
Acklamba's mission was not concluded but he set out to go.
Immediately he started going Luman slaughtered a he goat and asked the wife to prepare a good dish so as to celebrate his victory over Acklamba's torture.
But Acklamba was only pretending, he did not go anywhere long, he went out to a small distance and turned back and was whistling loudly to signal his return to Luman' house with pretense that he left without wishing all the people good-bye.
DEATH OF A GOAT TURN TO MOURNING OF A CHILD: On hearing the whistle of Acklamba, Luman called for a hoe and dug a pit where he buried the he-goat.
The entire family went into mourning that one of Luman's children was dead and that he was just buried.
Acklamba had to join them in mourning and as he cried he went lying on the grave pretending that the boy died suddenly and how he wished it were not so.
His exercise made him to touch the leg of s goat, because the goat was hurriedly buried, one of the legs showed up.
Acklamba took a firm hold of the leg and pulled the goat out asking, "which type of child that has a resemblance of a goats leg".
Luman had no other choice but to ask the wife to prepare food which he will share with Acklamba.
This was how Aklamba shared in Luman's food.
