How to Incorporate Art With Fractions

    • 1). Pass out all supplies to students. They will each get two pieces of construction paper, a pair of scissors, a ruler and crayons. One sheet of paper will be white or manila colored and the other can be their choice.

    • 2). Instruct students on how to fold the pieces of paper into sixteenths. Start by folding the paper in half, connecting the left side to the right side, and then in half again. This will create fourths. Then have the students fold the paper two more times, from top to bottom, so that they end up with 16 equal sections.

    • 3). Tell students to use a ruler to trace the lines with a black crayon and then color each quarter section a separate color. Coloring the quarter sections is not necessary, but it does give them a reference for later in the lesson. Instruct students to use their scissors to cut out the sections on the black lines. This will give them the 16 individual sections.

    • 4). Use the other piece of construction paper as a base to create fractions on. Give the students examples of fractions to create. For example, if you ask them to create 1/4, they would take all of their pieces that are the same color and place them on the mat. Allow them to make the fractions with their pieces and then demonstrate the correct answer. Using the second piece of paper as a base allows the children to compare the fraction that they are creating to the whole.
