Does the DMV Check for Warrants?

    Function

    • The DMV exists to regulate driver and vehicle laws and safety. Prospective drivers must get a driver's license before they can register and/or operate a vehicle. If a driver has a warrant from either the police or court system, this will not necessarily keep them from accessing services at the DMV.

    Considerations

    • The DMV runs background checks on prospective drivers by using the National Driver Register (NDR). The database contains driving records, names and aliases, date of birth, license number, social security number, personal physical descriptors and (if applicable) pointers (or points deducted) by prior traffic offenses. The database does not contain information about criminal offenses unrelated to traffic convictions.

    Misconceptions

    • Some states have red flag indicators that appear in the NDR register records of those with warrants. However, this will not necessarily keep a prospective driver from utilizing DMV services if the warrant is for a misdemeanor.
