The big blind special is a term used to describe an instance wherein the player in the big blind position wins a hand although he or she is holding poor cards. This often happens because not a single player raises or raised significantly before the flop is dealt. This is often the case when players not in the big blind position pick up poor cards and simply call or fold before the flop.

This gives the player in the big blind position an opportunity to see the flop for free. When that player sees that the flop has increased their chance of winning, that player only needs to meet or match the raise instead of coldly calling the entire amount.

For example, the player in the big blind position picked up a 3 and an 8 off suit pre-flop and another player picked up an ace and a king off suit pre-flop. The player with the ace-king is confident that he will win because he has a strong hand and makes a raise. However, as the flop is revealed, the players see that the three cards are ace-three-8.

The player with the ace-king will assume he has the strongest hand because he now has an ace pair but the player in the big blind position has an even better hand because he now has a 3-8 two-pair. Given that no king or ace is revealed in the turn and river, the person in the big blind position will win with a big blind special, especially if both players go all in.
