Physician Executive MBA Programs

    • The Physician Executive MBA, or PEMBA, is an Master of Business Administration program that is offered exclusively for physicians who seek to develop leadership, management and business operation skills in medical facilities. According to the National Association of MD/MBA Students, there are over a dozen universities that offer such healthcare-oriented MBAs.

    University of Tennessee

    • Located in Knoxville, the University of Tennessee was the first educational institution in the United States to offer the PEMBA, which it introduced in 1998. With classes entirely composed of physicians only, and with no business prerequisites required, Tennessee's PEMBA only takes a year to complete. (It usually takes twice as long to complete a regular MBA program.) Classes being in early January, with graduation scheduled for December of each year. Tennessee's PEMBA program is available nationwide due to its online feature, although four one-week on-site residence periods are required.

    Auburn University

    • Named after the Alabama city where it is located, Auburn University's PEMBA program consists of five three-and-a-half-day residencies on campus, two study trips that consist of one to Washington, DC, and the other to a foreign location, DVD lectures, and Internet discussions. The program usually takes 21 months to complete.

    Duke University

    • Offered by Duke's Fuqua School of Business, the Health Sector Management (HSM) program is split into several tracks. The Daytime HSM is a full-time two-year residency program that deals with health care issues. The 16-month Continent HSM is for students who want to combine online learning with international residencies, with the 18-month Global Executive HSM, a version for more experienced health care professionals. The 19-month weekend HSM is for part-time students who are working full time. Additionally, there is the HSM program for Fuqua alumni who want to strengthen their health care expertise.
