Tips for Violin Teachers: How to Encourage Your Students to Practice

The role of the violin teachers is very important in developing the child's interest and skill in playing the violin. But even with constant focus and guidance to every student during the class, the teacher cannot monitor the students' practice time when they are at home.

Practice is very important because it helps the students become more fully acquainted with the violin. During the class, the teacher can teach a new skill to the student in regards to playing the violin. However, students need to spend considerable amount of practice time to master complicated techniques.

Reasons Why the Child Won't Practice

It is typical for children to have short attention span, especially when they are young. At the beginning, the student may feel excited to practice especially if he is using a new violin set. But as he repeats practicing a song over and over, it feels more of a chore rather than an enjoyable experience.

Another reason why a child won't feel like practicing the violin is fatigue after doing many other things throughout the day. Students who attend violin schools may also have other activities. They may be attending swimming classes, art classes, etcetera, and they may feel tired and unmotivated at the end of the day.

Peer and parental pressure can also be reasons why children dislike practicing or even playing the violin. Children, especially the older ones would rather spend time doing things that their friends do such as social networking and video gaming if they don't see the violin as a "cool" instrument.

How to Encourage Practice

There are many ways you can help your student become naturally attracted to playing the violin and practice it regularly. Violin teachers should take advantage of the moment when children are still excited with their new musical instruments. Avoid giving them demanding timetable and practice hours. An hour of practice a day is enough, but you can even reduce this to a shorter time, as long as practice is done on a regular basis.

Advise your students to practice during the morning, when they are not yet tired and their minds are still fresh. As the day moves along, a student may have more and more reasons not to practice as he may feel exhausted after all his other activities.

When teaching children, a violin teacher really needs to adapt to their "wavelength" or their range of interest. The students need to view the violin as something "cool" for them to get excited to learn and master the musical instrument. Teach your students their favorite songs, so they will be motivated to practice.

The Role of the Parents

The parents are also important in encouraging the child to practice the violin. By exposing them to various types of music, they can inspire their children to want to excel in playing the violin. Parents should also make sure that the violin is in an accessible place at home. This way, the child can always play the violin whenever he likes to.

It is not only the role of the violin schools and teachers to help develop the skill of a violin student, as the home is an important factor as well. A home which encourages music is conducive to practicing and learning the violin.
