- 1). Test the water for thallium. The Maximum Contaminant Level Goal set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is 0.5 parts per billion (ppb), and the Maximum Contaminant Level that is enforceable is 2 parts per billion. If the level is consistently above 2 ppb, then steps must be taken to lower the levels.
- 2). Install an activated alumina filter. Activated alumina is one of only two EPA-approved methods to remove thallium. The other method is ion exchange, which is significantly more costly and difficult to perform. These water filters can be purchased online and are generally installed on your refrigerator, ice-maker or other slow-flow water devices. They are generally advertised as fluoride filters because activated alumina also removes fluoride.
- 3). Contact your local water company or local government if you believe the levels are above 2 ppb, as this is the level at which they will be required to perform their own filtering or ion exchange. This precaution can help keep drinking water safe for all your neighbors.
