- 1). Prepare your garden area by tilling the soil and by adding compost or well-rotted manure to make it rich in nitrogen. Nitrogen-rich soil ensures an abundant crop of watermelons.
- 2). Dig a trench around the outside edges of where you will plant your watermelons. The trench should be about 2 to 3 inches deep. Lay down one or more soaker hoses over the soil. How many you use will be determined by how large your planting area is.
- 3). Lay a piece of black plastic mulch over the garden area you have tilled with the ends of the plastic lying over the trench you dug. Use soil or gravel to fill in the trench all the way around, being sure to cover the ends of the black plastic so it is held down securely.
- 4). Cut 3-inch holes in the black plastic mulch in which to plant your watermelon plants. Water your plants well after planting, using the soaker hose that was placed under the black plastic. Avoid using overhead watering methods, which do not provide adequate moist and can cause fungus to develop on the plants leaves.
