- 1). Click the Windows "Start" button. If you are using Windows XP, right-click the "Computer" icon and select "Properties." If you are using Windows 2000, right-click the "My Computer" desktop icon and select "Properties." Both of these methods open a similar window that displays your system processor and memory.
- 2). View the processor and memory for your computer in the opened Properties window. Compare them to the Vista system requirements listed at the Windows Vista System Requirements page at Windows.Microsoft.com. If your processor or memory is slower or has less capacity than Microsoft lists, you cannot run Vista.
- 3). Close the System Properties window. Click the Windows "Start" button again and select "Computer." If you run Windows 2000, double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. The opened window for both operating systems shows the hard drive on your computer.
- 4). Right-click your hard drive and select "Properties." The opened window shows you hard drive capacity. Vista requires 40GB in free hard drive space. Make sure your hard drive meets this requirement.
