Gram-Positive Bacteria in Urinary Tract Infections

    Gram-Positive Bacteria

    • Gram-positive bacteria is often the result of an overuse of antibiotics resulting in the body being resistant to the medicines. Some types of gram-positive bacteria are enterococci, group B streptococci, E faecalis and coagulase negative staphylococci.

    Source

    • The main source of gram-positive bacteria is the stomach/intestinal tract where it is passed through stool and into the urinary tract. This is seen in women wiping from back to front and patients who pass feces in diapers which then contaminates the urinary tract.

    Urinary Tract Infection

    • A urinary tract infection caused by gram-positive bacteria is usually the result of a nosocomial (caused by a health care facility) infection.

    Risk

    • Gram-positive bacteria in urinary tract infections are seen more in patients with recurrent urinary infections, pregnant women, men and patients with permanent urinary catheters.

    Percentage

    • One to 2 percent of all urinary tract infections are caused by gram-positive bacteria. This is a small amount but they are serious infections when they do occur.
