- Diabetes expands the blood vessel of the eyes until they collapse and new vessels take their place. Unfortunately, because these vessels are defective, they cannot hold their blood and burst, leading to blurry vision. Cataracts can also appear on the eyes' lens as well as glaucoma, which can result in nerve damage and blindness.
- Diabetes also affects the blood vessels in your kidneys by collapsing existing vessels and overworking the remaining ones. Because having diabetes also increases your glucose levels, this can result not only in kidney disease, but bladder infections as well. (Complete kidney failure is rare in diabetics.)
- Diabetes leads to blockages in the heart, resulting in heart disease, heart attacks and even strokes. It also causes weaker circulation in the body. Minor cuts are slower to heal, and more prone to infection. Sometimes amputations of the legs and feet are necessary because of poor circulation and nerve damage.
- Diabetes damages the nerves in the body, resulting in numbness, especially in the feet. This can lead to infection, and if untreated, possible amputation, as discussed above.
