What Allergy Products Can Be Used With Asthma?

    Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines are one of the most widely used medications for both allergies and asthma, due their effectiveness in blocking histamine. Histamine is a chemical in the body that is released during an allergic response. Antihistamines work to counter that response and to either prevent the allergic reaction from occurring or reduce symptoms. For mild reactions, antihistamines are available over the counter, or by prescription for more chronic cases. They are best taken at the first sign of a reaction, as it can take about 30 minutes before any relief is felt.

    Leukotriene Blockers

    • Medications that contain leukotriene blockers are very effective for allergy and asthma sufferers. Leukotrienes are molecules in the body that send messages to other cells. This ability allows them to create inflammation. This process is thought to be responsible for many inflammatory diseases, including allergies and asthma. By taking a daily leukotriene blocker, that ability to create inflammation can be halted. Drugs that contain leukotriene blockers are prescribed to be taken orally daily. They are used as a preventative type of drug, so immediate relief is not to be expected. In fact, it often takes a couple of weeks before any impact on symptoms is noticed.

    Decongestants

    • Decongestants are a very helpful type of medication for those with allergies and asthma. Because both are associated with increased inflammation and congestion, using a decongestant is an obvious choice to help reduce symptoms. Nasal sprays are the most common form, although decongestants are available that can be taken orally. Like antihistamines, decongestants should be taken at the first sign of symptoms, as they can take up to 30 minutes to take effect. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, decongestants are available over the counter and by prescription.
