Hanging hummingbird feeders will usually attract the tiny jeweled birds we all enjoy watching.
But if you truly adore these avian creatures with all their gravity defying behavior, and want to attract even more to your feeders there are a few proven, yet simple things you can do to optimize hummingbird attraction.
The myth of red nectar is just that, a myth.
Last season we used the simple sugar water recipe, and were amazed at the increased numbers of hummingbirds.
The existing, same four feeders had nearly tripled with the number of hummingbirds, and were constantly buzzing with activity.
It is the red color of the feeder itself that actually lures the birds.
Hummingbirds do seem to prefer the sugar water over commercial nectar mixes, and once they visit a feeder, are known to revisit the same spot year after year.
Another fantastic lure for hummingbirds is a mister which hooks up to your garden hose.
The mister's flow can be adjusted to save on water costs, and even hooked up to a timer if you are in an area with water restrictions.
Once a hummingbird finds this gentle water source, it will revisit the same spot year after year.
Several types of misters are available with a variety of choices for installation.
They may be wrapped around a stake in the ground, attached to a tree branch, or bracket on your deck or porch, or even placed directly in a bird bath.
Not only hummingbirds, but butterflies, warblers and many other species greatly enjoy this type of water source.
So next season, when its time to put out your hummingbird feeders, remember the simple sugar water recipe, (preferred over commercial nectars) and try enticing more hummingbirds with a garden mister.
You'll be amazed at the results!
