- Front-loading washing machines are more susceptible to odors because of their design. The door on top loaders rests on a lip while operating, whereas the door on front loaders locks to form a watertight seal. Over time, mold can grow on the gasket, which is just one of a few reasons your washer can develop an odor. Whether you own a front or top loader, there are several cures for a smelly washing machine.
- Clean the inside of the door and the seals thoroughly with a mold-killing cleaner like bleach. Using a dry cloth, wipe everything down and leave the door open.
- Mix 1 part baking soda with 2 parts vinegar to equal about 3 cups. Run the washing machine on a hot water cycle without clothing, slowly pouring in the vinegar-baking soda mixture. If the machine still has an odor, run the cycle again using bleach instead of the baking soda-vinegar mixture. Leave the door open when the cycle ends so the machine can dry thoroughly.
- If your washing machine still smells after the maintenance wash, you may want to call in a professional. The odor might be coming from the outer drum or connecting hose. Dismantling your washer will likely void your warranty, so let a repairman handle the situation.
