- TiVo is a DVR service that allows for the recording of live TV without any external storage media, such as DVDs or VHS tapes. Offering HD channels and the ability to integrate directly into cable systems, TiVo is an excellent system for catching up on TV you might otherwise miss. Although the interface is simple and intuitive, you may encounter problems--in which case tips to getting the most from your service will be useful.
- Sorting your Now Playing list in TiVo HD can be a real time saver if you have many similar programs recorded. Simply navigate to the Now Playing list, scroll down to the sort/group options and press "Enter" to bring up the sort options. Toggle between the sort options displayed using the left and right keys on your remote and then select the "Groups" option and turn it on or off.
- Because a correctly set up TiVo HD can access broadband Internet, you can use it to view photos that others have uploaded. From the main menu, select "Products and More" and then "Photos and Slideshows." Enter any keyword, and you will see pictures tagged with that keyword.
- TiVo HD has integration for web videos as well, allowing you to find and record videos form CNET, the Onion and The New York Times. From the main menu, select "Find Programs," go to "Web Videos and Downloads," select the broadcast provider and then simply view your videos. You can even get applications for TiVo HD to integrate with YouTube.
- You can change the style of the strip that displays information on your TiVo HD. Simply press the right button on your remote repeatedly and toggle between the styles.
- Although most people know about unplugging the TiVo HD box to reboot the system, there is an easier method that you can do from your couch. Navigate to the TiVo HD Setup menu and select "Restart Receiver." This helps keep your personal settings instead of wiping them out, as an unplug-restart would do.
- TiVo HD offers a way to find shows based on somewhat obscure criteria as well. An example of this is finding a show or film that has a specific actor in it. Just go from the main menu to "Find Programs" and then create a wishlist search and select your criteria. For the example, select "Highlight Actor" and enter the actor's name.
