Information on a Flaking RV Rubber Roof

    Causes

    • Many things can cause flaking of an RV rubber roof, such as exposure to weather, especially acid rain and hail, as well as constant exposure to UV rays. Damage to the roof can occur from road debris, impact from branches and walking on the roof.

    Remedies

    • Most flaking is eliminated by scrubbing the roof with borax and a stiff brush. Repeat the process until no more material flakes off. Rinse well. If the flaking reappears within a month, the roof requires sealing. To seal a rubber roof, use a sealer specifically designed for rubber roofs. Clean the roof prior to sealing. Trailer Life recommends a product called 303 for sealing rubber roofs.

    Considerations

    • Large areas of flaking may require that the roof be repaired or replaced. Patch kits and replacement kits are available at most RV stores. Repairing or replacing the roof is a task that most RV owners can perform as a DIY project.
