How to Start Snapdragons

    • 1). Fill 2-inch starter pots with vermiculite and level the surface. Start the seeds indoors eight weeks before the date of your last spring frost.

    • 2). Sprinkle seeds on the surface of the vermiculite and gently press into the mix. Do not cover the seeds with additional vermiculite.

    • 3). Fill an old cake pan or other shallow container with 1 inch of water. Set the pots of seeds into the water. The water should only come about halfway up the sides of the starter pots. Leave the starter pots in the water until the surface of the vermiculite looks damp.

    • 4). Remove the pots from the water and place them in a dry container to allow any excess moisture to drain away. Water plants in this manner when the vermiculite is dry on its surface. The seeds will take up to three weeks to germinate.

    • 5). Place the starter pots on a heated seed-starting mat, on top of the refrigerator or somewhere else that's warm. The seeds need warmth to germinate.

    • 6). Move the seedlings under fluorescent grow lights as soon as they begin to germinate. Position the lights so that they are only a few inches above the plants. Move the lights up as the plants grow larger.

    • 7). About two weeks before the date of your last frost, begin to harden off your snapdragon seedlings. Put them outdoors in the shade for a longer period each day, until they are outdoors all the time. Cover them or bring them indoors if frost threatens.

    • 8). Transplant snapdragons into your garden after all danger of frost has past.
