If you're looking for skiing, a number of ski resorts are located in and around the city of Red Lodge, Montana. Straddling central south Montana and northern Wyoming, The Gallatin Mountains boast some of the most rugged and scenic terrain in Montana and offer world-class skiing facilities for skiers of all levels of experience. - Red Lodge Mountain Resort opened in 1960 and offers skiing for all levels--beginner to expert--with slopes ranging from green to challenging double black diamonds. Red Lodge is open for skiing in the winter and golf in the summer. With an average snowfall of 250 inches, you can see why this is a popular destination. The resort has 1600 acres of ski-able terrain and a 2400-foot vertical drop. As of 2010, full-day ski tickets are $47 per adult and $17 per child with discounts for teens, seniors, college students and military personnel. Ski instruction is provided as well. There is no particular hotel associated with Red Lodge; however, there is plenty of lodging available in the area, including Rock Creek Resort, Alpine Lodge and the Pollard Hotel.

redlodgemountain.com - If cross-country skiing is more your thing, check out Red Lodge Nordic Center. It has 15 kilometers of groom trails that are on mild terrain but still offer good skiing and excellent views. The center offers ski clinics and children's courses throughout the winter, so contact the center for dates and classes. Touted by the city itself as an affordable alternative to other ski areas, passes for adults and teens are $5 and free for seniors and children 12 and younger, as of 2010.

beartoothtrails.org - On the other side of the Gallatin Mountains is Big Sky Resort with its 3,812 ski-able acres and 4,350 feet of vertical drop. A large ski resort with world-class skiing and short to nonexistent lift lines, Big Sky Resort offers two mountain faces (east and south) and skiing from green to double black diamond slopes. Snowboarders have their own terrain park, and if you want to use inner tubes, there's a tube park for you. The cost of tickets changes each season, so be sure to check their website. Lodging includes the Shoshone, Village Center and Huntley Lodge as well as other properties located within walking distance of the slopes.
