How to Collect Vegetables & Fruit Scraps

    • 1). Set aside a portion of your yard for compost piles, or build a container in which to keep your compost.

    • 2). Designate a bin with a lid in your kitchen to be your fruit and vegetable scrap holder. The lid will help eliminate odors that may come from the scraps as they age before you can put them in your outside compost pile. Keep vegetable and fruit scraps, as well as crushed eggshells, in this bin in your kitchen.

    • 3). Toss the contents of the kitchen scrap bin into your outside compost pile. Your compost pile should be 50 percent fruit and vegetable scraps, and 50 percent brown material, such as lawn and hedge clippings, leaves, shredded paper shopping bags and newspaper.
