- 1). Find a sponsor. Individuals cannot apply for a security clearance on their own---you will need support. The group 'Contractor UK' point out "this would be from an organization that requires your skills and is willing to invest time and resources to gain security clearance."
- 2). Agree on the type of clearance required. Discuss this with your sponsor. The level is likely to be dictated by their contract and the type of work they are carrying out.
- 3). Undergo the vetting and checking process. For lower levels of security clearance, this may be carried out by the prospective employer; for higher levels it is likely to be carried out by the Metropolitan Police, Ministry of Defence or other government departments. The checks are likely to include a security questionnaire, a criminal records check and a credit reference check. At the higher level they may also include medical and psychological checks, a security service check and a review of personal finances.
- 4). Gain your security clearance.
