- 1). Sand the board end grain using a power sander with medium-grit sandpaper. Keep the surface flat and square. Change to fine grit sandpaper to refine and smooth the end grain even further; then use fine steel wool to give the end grain a "rubbed" look and feel.
- 2). Apply your chosen finishing material--stain, varnish, urethane, paint or other finish. Apply several coats using a 2-inch wide brush or clean rag. Allow to dry between coats and lightly sand each coat.
- 3). Gently rub the dry finish with steel wool until it shows no imperfections such as scratches or dust. The wood grain should only be evident if you used a clear finish material. Painted end grain should be smooth and scratch-free.
