- 1). Navigate horizontally to the "Settings" option on the main XMB menu.
- 2). Navigate vertically to the "Sound Settings" option.
- 3). Select "Audio Output Settings." This brings you to a new screen.
- 4). Select the type of cord connection you use. There are three choices. HDMI is a single, rectangular connector for audio and video labeled "HDMI OUT" on the PS3. Digital Out is a square-shaped connector for audio only and is labeled "DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL)." The last choice is labeled "AV MULTI OUT"; this corresponds to the "Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI" option on your display.
- 5). Identify whether your headphones and receiver are "HDMI" and "Digital Out" capable. This does not apply if you use the "AV MULTI OUT" connection. You must know if your headphones and receiver support stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, and their kilohertz ratings. Equipment capabilities vary, so check your user manuals for specifics. If there are differences in the performance limits of your headphones and receiver, use the lesser of the two. If you can't figure out the ratings, select the lower-kilohertz choices among the linear 2-channel options.
- 6). Select the output formats supported by your headphones and receiver on the PS3. Select all formats with which each device is compatible.
- 7). Test the sound to make sure it works and sounds good. Play a movie or video game to make sure the stereo or surround-sound effects are working properly.
