- 1). Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles office and pick up the following forms:
Bill of Sale -- this document is necessary if the title does not indicate the date and price of sale. The form must be notarized and signed by both the current and new owner of the vehicle.
Odometer Disclosure Statement - this is needed if the title does not include this information and the vehicle is less than ten years old.
Vehicle Identification Number Verification form -- completion is required only if the vehicle is previously titled outside of Colorado. - 2). Obtain the old title with the assignment completed by the previous owner.
- 3). Take the vehicle for an emission test if applicable for your county of residence. Obtain a proof of test form from the tester.
- 4). Arrange for appropriate insurance coverage on the vehicle and obtain a proof of liability coverage.
- 5). Gather all the required documents along with a government issued ID, such as a valid driver's license and return to the DMV office.
- 6). Present your documents plus payment for title transfer to the DMV clerk.
