- Some IT hiring managers may worry that you won’t fit in if you turn up in a suit. Jobs in computing are generally dominated by a more relaxed dress code, and a suit is considered too formal. Do turn up looking smart, though. A collared shirt and tie with slacks or khakis should do the job. For women, a smart-looking sweater or blouse teamed with a skirt or slacks looks right.
- If you are concerned about hitting the right tone, do some research on the company ahead of time. Call the human resources department and ask what would be considered appropriate interview attire. Alternatively, visit the company lobby and observe employees coming and going. A good rule of thumb is to dress one step smarter than the everyday dress code at the company.
- Put your chosen outfit on a couple of days ahead of the interview to check if anything needs to be dry-cleaned or have missing buttons replaced, and to see if everything still fits. Have a trusted friend (preferably one who works in the industry) look you over before your interview and give his opinion. You’ll feel more confident if you’ve already been scrutinized with a critical eye.
- Even if you decide that your clothing can be informal, your grooming should be impeccable. Your clothes should be clean and neatly pressed and they should fit well. Your shoes should be shined, and your nails trimmed. Brush your teeth and comb your hair, and do a last-minute check with a hand mirror to make sure everything’s in place before you walk in.
