How to Clean Central Air Evaporator Coils

    • 1). Turn off the air conditioner at the thermostat.

    • 2). Unscrew the screws that hold your air handler access panel in place and set the panel and screws aside.

    • 3). Brush the dust on the coils with light pressure from a soft bristle utility brush.

    • 4). Vacuum the accumulated dirt and dust from the air handler with a hand held vacuum. Be careful not to touch the vacuum to the coils and damage them.

    • 5). Spray a consistent, light coat of foaming, no-rinse, coil cleaner on the coils.

    • 6). Verify that cleanser is draining from the drain pan into the PVC drain, after the cleaner breaks down and liquefies. Flush the drain with a quart of a mixture of equal parts bleach and water, to completely remove the cleanser from the system.

    • 7). Replace the access panel and screw it in place with the screws you removed previously.

    • 8). Turn the air conditioner back on at the thermostat.
