Sandra Fong, Olympic Rifle Shooter
From the Pool to the Range:
Sandra Fong got her start in competition in the swimming pool, and her sister Danielle even owns a Gold medal earned by legendary Olympic swimmer Dara Torres. (Danielle Fong, who has cerebral palsy, qualified to be a USA rifle shooter at the 2008 Paralympic Games.)
After her father decided to get back into competitive rifle shooting, he introduced his daughters to the sport.
They took to it, and soon began shooting in serious competitions. A few short years later, Sandra earned a place on USA Shooting's Women's Olympic Rifle team.
Edging out Her Sister:
Sandra's sister Abigail (who is two years older than she), also a member of USA Shooting's Rifle Team, gave her some serious competition at the 2008 Olympic qualifier. Abigail was actually ahead of Sandra after day one, but Sandra came through in the end, winning second place and securing a spot at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Winning Medals:
Born in 1990, this New York City native has been winning medals with her rifles since 2006. She has won Silver twice at USAS National Championships, with her air rifle in 2006 and her smallbore rifle in 2007. She has also set Junior records in 50m prone and 3 position air rifle.
One of her 2008 highlights was becoming Smallbore Champion at the Junior Olympic Rifle Championships.
Driven:
Like many competitive shooters, Sandra obviously has a lot of drive. Even while steadily improving her shooting, she has competed in high school swimming and track & field, not to mention writing and directing plays, playing the trumpet, and singing with her high school jazz band.
Sandra has said that after the 2008 Olympics she will head off to Princeton University to get busy learning to become a doctor. Is there any project this gal won't tackle?
At the 2008 Games:
Sandra placed 21st in Women's 50m 3-position rifle, ending her shot at a 2008 Olympic medal. But there's always 2012!
