Mandatory Signs for Church Buildings

Mandatory signs in church buildings serve as a tool to give people any information needed about safety precautions, equipment, and hazards around the premises. These signs can also be used to compliment other existing preventative measures. There are several styles that are commonly used and each type is characterised by a certain shape and color.

In a church building, no smoking signs are required and these signs will have to include the text written in the relevant English, Welsh, and Scottish legislation. There should also be hot surface signs for heaters that can get excessively hot. For example, if anyone could have a burn from touching the heater and where guarding the area cannot be reasonably provided. These hot water signs near any taps when the water temperature is not regulated and above 50 degrees should also be provided. There must also be prohibition signs that limit access to any unauthorised personnel from confined spaces and boiler rooms. Finally, first-aid signs as well as "wet floor" signs should also be in place as needed.

The type of sign for each of these uses will have a certain shape and colour. Green signs are known as safe condition signs. They can either inform people of the location of safety equipment such as first-aid equipment in an emergency. The most common example of this sign would be the First Aid sign which features a cross on a green background.

Red signs are known as fire safety signs. These are only used for showing the specific location of certain equipment with an examploe of fire extinguishers. This sign should be present in all church buildings. Similarly, blue circles are known as mandatory signs. These are signs which give orders meaning that they direct people to do whatever action is printed on the sign. For example, a fire door sign with the words "fire door keep shut" on a blue coloured circle is common.

A red circle that has a line through it is known as a prohibition sign and should be present in a church building. It indicates that visitors should not do whatever action is shown on the sign. The most common use in a church would be a no smoking sign which has a red circle with a diagonal line that crosses out a cigarette printed on a white background. The no smoking laws in the UK also require text to be displayed on the sign that explain it is prohibited by the law to smoke on the premises.

Yellow triangles are known as caution signs and may be used in a church building as needed. They are primarily used if something dangerous should be brought to a person's attention. The sign is a yellow triangle featuring a black border and an exclamation mark. Use these signs with caution since it may mean that enough precautions may not have been put into place if this sign is needed.

These are the mandatory signs mandated in church buildings although some may not be needed depending on the space. Other signs may also be used to point out the toilets and other needs. They can be in any format desired but should not easily be confused with the safety signs. All signs need to have the right symbol in order to be in agreement with the law so pay special attention to the signs being used in church buildings.
