By using everyday household items in a new or different way, you can completely change the décor of your home. Repurpose linens and clothing in creative and meaningful ways while displaying your creativity and ingenuity. Make memorable conversation pieces by grouping or assembling collages. Bring the outdoors in and think green by drying some colorful wildflowers. Claim someone else's discarded items as treasures of your own. Once you learn how to decorate without cost, the possibilities are endless. - Explore your house for yards of fabric that you never use like tablecloths, curtains or beach towels. Cut two squares out of the fabric, place right sides together and stitch all four sides to make a slipcover. Turn inside out, insert the pillow and whipstitch the opening closed. Another source for fabric is outdated clothing such as old suits, denim or rarely worn bridesmaid dresses. Leave them plain or embellish them with ribbon, buttons or beaded trims.
- Sew up a valance in trendy colors using extra bed sheets. Make simple panel curtains from bed sheets or cotton tablecloths. Stitch some pretty handkerchiefs together in a diamond pattern to create an old world valance. Do the same with Western bandanas for a Southwest flare. Swag a long, pretty scarf over a curtain rod, allowing the ends to cascade down the sides.
- Dig through some old photos and mount or frame them in groupings. Classify your memories into groups such as favorite vacations or special friends. Tell someone's life story by arranging pictures from youngest to oldest. Capture moments in time by cropping the most interesting parts of photos and arranging them into an abstract collage.
- Clip wild flowers, bundle them with string or yarn and hang them upside down until they are dried. ProFlowers.com recommends using flowers that are not in full bloom to avoid losing petals. Arrange in a pretty vase or other container. Look for unusual objects to use as a vase such as a teapot, an old boot or a fluted wine glass. Dried flowers last a long time, but when they wilt, repurpose them again by pulling off the petals and using them for potpourri.
- Pick up new or used decorative items for no cost by becoming a member of Freecycle.org. This free online community groups members by zip code. Others in your vicinity post items they don't want. All you have to do is claim them, contact the lister and arrange to pick them up. Look for new finds every day. When you are ready for a change, relist the items on the site for others and scout some new finds.
